Description
For sample adults age 18 and older who currently smoke cigarettes every day or some days (SMOKFREQNOW), CSWANTQUIT indicates if the person would like to completely quit smoking cigarettes. Please see the Universe tab for detailed information about who was asked this question in specific survey years.
From 1993 through 2015, CSWANTQUIT indicates if the person would like to completely quit smoking cigarettes for respondents who have ever smoked at least 100 cigarettes in her/his life, and currently smoke or for whom current smoking status is unknown (for 1993-2000 only).
Comparability
There are minor changes in the universe statement between years, as outlined in the Universe tab, which impact the comparability of this variable over time. Users are advised to consider the impact that changes in the universe may have on their analyses when using data from multiple years.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
Universe
- 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who smoked at least 100 cigarettes and currently smoke.
- 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who smoked at least 100 cigarettes and currently smoke.
- 2000: Sample adults age 18+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes and who either currently smoke or whose current smoking status is unknown.
- 2005: Sample adults age 18+ who smoked at least 100 cigarettes and currently smoke.
- 2010; 2015: Sample adults 18+ who are current smokers.
- 2022: Sample adults 18+ who currently smoke every day or some days (SMOKFREQNOW).
