Description

For sample adults under age 65 who had ever heard of HPV (HPVHEAR), HPV indicates whether the respondent believed that HPV goes away without treatment. HPVGOES was one of a series of questions designed to evaluate knowledge of HPV, the human papillomavirus.

Interviewers prefaced these questions by stating, "These next questions are about HPV. Your best guess is fine." In addition to HPVCANCER, the questions (and their associated IPUMS NHIS variables) were:

  • Believes HPV spread through sexual contact (HPVSEX)

  • Believes HPV causes cervical cancer (HPVCANCER)

.

Female sample adults under age 65 were then asked whether they had ever been diagnosed with HPV (HPVHADEV).

Other HPV-related questions covered the HPV vaccine, including awareness of its existence, whether already received, and cost barriers to vaccination. For the full list of questions about HPV and additional information, including definitions and CDC recommendations for vaccination, see HPVHEAR.
