Description
For sample adults, CATARACTSURG indicates if the individual ever had cataract surgery. Please see the Universe tab for multiple changes in this variable's universe over time.
[show more]The Field Representative's Manual did not provide a definition for cataract surgery but the Manual described cataracts as, "clouding of the lenses which causes a general loss of detail. This may cause problems with glare or distortion, such as double images."
Comparability
This variable has had slight changes in the question wording occurred, but this is not likely to affect responses. In 2008-forward the question specifically asked if the person had "cataract surgery," but in the 1984 survey individuals were asked if they had "an operation for cataracts." There are also important differences in universes between the 1984, 2008-17 and 2023 samples. See the Universe tab for details.
In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
