Description
For sample adults age 18 to 49, STD5YR indicates whether the respondent had a sexually transmitted disease (STD) other than HIV or AIDS in the past five years.
Interviewers prefaced the question, "In the past five years, have you had an STD other than HIV?" with the following statement:
The next questions are about other sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. STDs are also known as venereal diseases or VD. Examples of STDs are gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, and genital warts.
Interviewers were instructed on the survey form, "If asked, tell respondent to include newly contracted STDs and recurring flare-ups of previously contracted STDs."
