Description

For sample adults ages 18 and older who had their homes tested for radon and whose tested radon level exceeded the EPA guideline of 4 picocuries per liter or was unknown (RADGUIDE), RADDONE reports if anything has been done in the home to reduce the level of radon exposure. Please see the comparability and universe tabs for more information about how this universe changes across samples.

RADDONE is included in the sample adult section within a series of questions about environmental health concerns, including testing for lead and radon. For more information and related variables, see RADHEAR or use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

In 1990, this question was asked of all respondents whose homes were tested for radon. In 1991 it was only asked of respondents whose tested radon levels exceeded the EPA guidelines of 4 picocuries per liter or was unknown. Beginning in 1993, this was only asked of respondents who knew that their tested radon levels exceeded the EPA guidelines of 4 picocuries per liter. In 1998, the universe was restricted to respondents whose tested radon levels exceeded the EPA guidelines of 4 picocuries per liter and who reported a tested radon level between 0004 and 9996 picocuries per liter. Data users should exercise caution when comparing frequencies across samples for RADDONE.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who had ever heard of radon with homes that were tested for radon.
  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 who have ever heard of radon with homes that were tested for radon, and the tested radon level was above the EPA guideline of 4 picocuries per liter or the tested radon level was unknown.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever heard of radon with homes that were tested for radon, and the tested radon level was above the EPA guideline of 4 picocuries per liter.
  • 1994: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever heard of radon with homes that were tested for radon, and the tested radon level was above the EPA guideline of 4 picocuries per liter.
  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever heard of radon with homes that were tested for radon, and the tested radon level was above the EPA guideline of 4 picocuries per liter, and actual radon level between 0004-9996 picocuries per liter was given.
