Description
For adults who were diagnosed or treated for high blood pressure (or, in 1989, for adults with confirmed diabetes), HYPMEDNOW reports if the person is currently taking medicine prescribed by a doctor to lower blood pressure. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for information on changes in universe between samples.
Comparability
Changes in universe somewhat limit comparability between samples. In most years, this question was asked of adults (ages 17 and older in 1974 and 1982; ages 18 and older in subsequent years) who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure other than during pregnancy, or who were ever prescribed medicine for high blood pressure, or (in 1989) with confirmed diabetes. See the Universe tab for information specific to each sample.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
