HYPCHECKNO is a 2-digit-numeric variable.
00: Never
14: 14 days/within the past two weeks (1974 only)
30: 30 days/less than one month (1974 only)
95: 95+
96: Not in Universe
97: Unknown-refused
98: Unknown-not ascertained
99: Unknown-don't know
In 1985-1994, the top code for HYPCHECKNO is 98; however, as there are no reported values over 95, IPUMS uses the top-code of 95 that is implemented in 1998 for these earlier years as well.
Description
For sample persons or adults age 18 and over, HYPCHECKNO reports the number of units for the time since blood pressure was last checked by a doctor or other health professional. HYPCHECKNO should be used in conjunction with HYPCHECKTP, which reports the corresponding time unit (days, weeks, months, or years).
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe and special reference period codes, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
