Description

For sample persons or adults aged 18 and over who were ever told they had hypertension or high blood pressure, HYP2TIME reports if they were told they had high blood pressure or hypertension on two or more DIFFERENT visits.

Comparability

For years prior to 1997, apart from changes in the universe, this variable is mostly comparable. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Changes introduced in 2019 affect the comparability of HYP2TIME with earlier samples. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
