Description
For sample adults and sample children who were ever told by a doctor or other health professional that they had asthma (ASTHMAEV), ASTHATAKYR identifies those who had an asthma attack/episode during the past 12 months.
Those who responded affirmatively to ASTHATAKYR were asked a follow-up question about whether they "had to visit an emergency room or urgent care center because of asthma" during the past 12 months (ASTHERYR).

Comparability
This variable is completely before 2019.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
Universe
- 1997-2018: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children age 0-17 who were ever told they had asthma.
- 2019-2023: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children age 0-17 who were ever told they had asthma (ASTHMAEV).
