Description
For sample adults and sample children who were ever told by a doctor or other health professional that they had asthma (ASTHMAEV), and, from 1997-2009, who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), ASTHERYR identifies those who visited an emergency room or urgent care center because of their asthma during the past 12 months.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe beginning in 2010, ASTHERYR is completely comparable before 2019.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
Universe
- 1997-2009: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children under age 18 who had an asthma attack/episode in the past 12 months.
- 2010-2018: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children under 18 who were ever told they had asthma.
- 2019-2022: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children age 0-17 who were ever told they had asthma.
