For sample adults who were ever diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional as having "inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel, or constipation severe enough to require medication" (BOWELIRINFEV) and who had this condition during the past 12 months (IRRBOWELYR), BOWELCONYR identifies those who had constipation severe enough to require medication during the past 12 months. Interviewers asked, "Which of these did you have in the past 12 months?" and listed "Constipation severe enough to require medication" as a possible response. Other possible responses included:

• Inflammatory bowel disease (BOWELINFYR)

• Irritable bowel (IRRBOWELYR)

Respondents could report more than one condition, as interviewers were instructed to enter all that applied.

Comparability

BOWELCONYR is only available for 2007.

For 2007, CONSTIPYR identifies sample children who had recurring constipation during the past 12 months. The question associated with CONSTIPYR did not specify that the condition be diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional.
