Description

SHOTPNUEV indicates whether sample adults/persons ever had a pneumonia vaccination.

The pneumococcal pneumonia shot protects against the bacteria that causes the most common kind of pneumonia. It is generally recommended for persons who are over age 65, whose immune system is weakened, who are scheduled to have chemotherapy, or who suffer from a chronic illness such as diabetes, lung disease, or heart disease.

Comparability

Along with universe changes, there were slight shifts in question wording and procedural changes for SHOTPNUEV.

 

In 1989, interviewers asked, "Have any adults in the family ever received a pneumonia vaccination? This shot first became available in 1979, and is given only once in a person's lifetime."
In 1991, 1993, and 1994, interviewers asked, "Have you ever had a pneumonia vaccination?" and added, "This shot is given only once in a person's lifetime."
In 1995, interviewers asked, "Have you ever had a pneumonia vaccination?" and added, "This shot was first made available in 1977 and is usually given once in a person's lifetime."
From 1997 to 2003, interviewers asked, "Have you ever had a pneumonia vaccination?" and added, "This shot is usually given only once in a person's lifetime and is different from the flu shot."

For 2003 forward, interviewers asked, "Have you ever had a pneumonia shot?" and added, "This shot is usually given only once or twice in a person's lifetime and is different from the flu shot. It is also called the pneumococcal vaccine."

As the question wording noted above indicates, proxy reporting (i.e., answers given by one household or family member for other household or family members) was allowed in 1989. In all other years, adult respondents answered the question for SHOTPNUEV only for themselves.

 

Proxy reporting is generally less accurate and complete than self-reporting, particularly regarding minor medical problems and brief contacts with health care professionals. Researchers should thus be particularly cautious about comparing results for SHOTPNUEV from 1989 to results from other years.

Finally, comparability may be impacted by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.   • 1989: Persons age 18+.
  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement)
  • 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement)
  • 1997-2018: Sample adults age 18+.
  • 2019-2023: Sample adults age 18+.
