Description

For sample adults who had ever received the hepatitis B vaccine (SHOTHEPBEV), SHOTHEPBNO indicates whether they had received at least 3 doses of the vaccine, or less than 3 doses.

The survey form included the following information on the vaccine, which interviewers were to read "if necessary":

This is given in three separate doses and has been available since 1991. It is recommended for newborn infants, adolescents, and people such as health care workers, who may be exposed to the hepatitis B virus.

Approximately 90 percent of people achieve immunity from hepatitis B after 3 doses of the vaccine. The U.S. Task Force on Adult Immunization recommends that adults have a blood test to determine whether they have achieved immunity from hepatitis B, 1 to 6 months after receiving three doses of the vaccine. If blood test results indicate the person is not immune (i.e., titer is not greater than 10 milli-International Units per milliliter of surface antibody in the vaccine recipient), the Task Force recommends the administration of an additional dose and a follow-up blood test. Up to 3 additional doses of hepatitis B vaccine may be administered to achieve immunity.
