Description
For sample adults who did not have a Tdap vaccine during pregnancy (TDAPPREG), SHOTET10Y indicates whether adults had a tetanus shot in the past 10 years. This immunization protects against tetanus (or lockjaw), a potentially fatal disease caused by bacteria found in soil and characterized by muscle stiffness and spasm or "locking" of the muscles of the jaw, neck, and limbs. The Field Representative's Manual for 1998-1999 notes that a booster shot against tetanus and diphtheria (the adult Td vaccine) is usually given at age 12 and is recommended for every 5 to 10 years thereafter. Prior to 2019, SHOTET10Y was asked of sample persons ages 18 and older.
Comparability
Comparability may be affected by changes in the universe and question wording and the questionnaire redesign introduced in 2019. The question wording was slightly different beginning in 2008 ("Have you received a tetanus shot in the past 10 years?") than in earlier years ("During the past 10 years, have you had a tetanus shot?"), but the meaning was essentially the same. Additionally, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. - 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement).
- 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement).
- 1998-1999: Sample adults age 18+.
- 2008-2018: Sample adults age 18+.
- 2019 2022: Sample adults age 18+ who did not have a Tdap vaccine during a recent pregnancy (TDAPPREG).
