Description
For sample adults and sample children, GOTWAGE indicates whether they or any family members 18 or older received income from wages, salaries, commissions, bonuses, tips, or self-employment during the previous calendar year. Prior to 2019, GOTWAGE was asked only of sample adults.

- Self-employment (GOTSEMP);
- Social Security or Railroad Retirement (GOTSS);
- Any other pension (GOTOTHPEN);
- Dividends or net rental income (GOTDIV);
- Interest income (GOTINT);
- Child support (GOTCHSUP).
- Income from any other source (GOTOTHER).
- Retirement, survivor, or disability pensions (GOTRET).
Comparability
Prior to 2019, this variable is comparable over time. Comparability may be affected by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
In addition, sample children were added to the universe in 2019.

- 1997-2018: Persons age 18+.
- 2019-2022: Sample adults 18+ and sample children 0-17.
- 2019-2023: Sample adults 18+ and sample children 0-17.
