Description

For all persons, GOTNEWELF indicates if, during the last calendar year, the personreceived any kind of welfare assistance, such as help getting a job, placement in education or job training programs, or help with transportation or child care during the last calendar year, EXCLUDING welfare assistance from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (GOTWELF) or public rent assistance (LOWRENT).

Comparability

For 1998, all persons interviewed in quarters 3 and 4 were asked this question. In 1999, all persons interviewed in quarters 2, 3, and 4 were asked this question. For 2000 forward, all persons were asked this question. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1998: All persons interviewed in quarters 3 and 4.
  • 1999: All persons interviewed in quarters 2-4.
  • 2000-2018: All persons.
