Description

For all households occupied by persons eligible for interview but for which no interview was obtained (Type A non-interviews), NONIVIEW reports the reason for the non-interview. This is documented by the field representative. Response categories include refusal, no one at home after making repeated calls, residents are temporarily absent during the interview week, language problem (introduced in 1995), or some other reason for Type A non-interview (e.g. impassable roads, quarantined households, or any other reason).

This question excludes households with Type B or C non-interviews. Type B non-interviews consist of vacant units, units occupied solely by persons who are not household members by Census definition, and certain other special situations (e.g. seasonal residences or units occupied solely by active duty members of the Armed Forces). Type C non-interviews consist of units which ordinarily would not be listed or sampled (e.g. permanently vacant, under construction, or condemned units).

Starting in 2019, this variable includes more details on whether the household completed the interview or if the household had a sufficient partial interview.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights. Other than minor changes in response categories, there are no comparability issues with this variable.

Starting in 2019, this variable includes more details on whether the household completed the interview or if the household had a sufficient partial interview.

The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
