Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons ages 18 and over with smoke detectors installed in the home, SMOKALWKNO2 reports the number of working smoke detector in the home, with a top code of 10+ smoke detectors.
Please see drop down menus for related variables.
Comparability
The question in 1985 and 1990 allowed respondents to identify up to 90 working smoke detectors in the home; however, only a small number of respondents reported having more than 10 smoke detectors installed. Data users interested in the complete data can use SMOKALWKNO1.
In 1985 this question was asked of all sample adults with one or more smoke detectors installed in the home, whether or not they are working (SMOKALARNO1, SMOKALARNO2). In 1990, this question was restricted to sample adults with at least two smoke detectors installed in the home. The 1994 question was asked of half of sample adults with at least two smoke detectors installed in the home. Changes in survey design may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
