Description

For sample persons aged 18 and over, SMOKALARNO2 reports the number of smoke detectors in the home, with a top code of 10+ smoke detectors. Both working and nonworking smoke detectors are counted.

Please see drop down menus for related variables.

Comparability

The question in 1985 and 1990 allowed respondents to identify up to 95 smoke detectors in the home; however, only a small number of respondents reported having more than 10 smoke detectors installed. Data users interested in the complete data can use SMOKALARNO1.

In 1985 and 1990, this question was asked of all sample persons aged 18 and over. In 1993 the question was asked of half of sample persons aged 18 and over in quarters 3 and 4, and in 1994 the question was asked of half of sample persons aged 18 and over during all quarters. Changes in survey design may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
