Description

For sample persons age 17 and older (1978-1980) and sample persons age 18 and older (1983, 1985 and 1990), who have ever smoked 100 cigarettes, and do not smoke now, QUITREGTP reports a type of time period associated with a numerical response (QUITREGNO) that together report about how long it has been since the person last smoked cigarettes fairly regularly. Users should combine these two variables to obtain the length of time since the person last smoked cigarettes fairly regularly. Comparability

There are minor changes in the universe statement between years, as outlined in the Universe tab, which impact the comparability of this variable over time. Users are advised to consider the impact that changes in the universe may have on their analyses when using data from multiple years.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
