Description

For sample children age 7 to 17 (in 1991) or 7 to 15 (in 1998), PLAYSPORTYR indicates whether, during the past 12 months, they played any of nine organized sports listed on a card.

The 1991 Field Representative's Manual defines "organized sports" as any sport that has a sponsor, including school-related activities (such as school varsity or junior varsity teams, intramural or club sports, and physical education classes) or sports played through community organizations, Little League, recreation centers, or Scouts, as well as private lessons.

Related Variables

For sample children with an affirmative answer in PLAYSPORTYR, a series of dichotomous variables indicate whether the child played each of the following sports:

If children played any of the following sports during the past 12 months, interviewers asked about the frequency with which they wore protective headgear and a mouthguard while playing that sport. For example, HGFOOTB and MGFOOTB report the frequency with which the child wore headgear and a mouthguard, respectively, while playing football during the past 12 months.

These questions were all part of the sample child health questionnaire in 1991. The 1991 Field Representative's Manual notes that the purpose of such questions was to obtain baseline data on child safety for the "Year 2000 Objectives of the Nation," a series of specific and quantifiable 10-year health objectives set forward by the Department of Health and Human Services in 1990.

In 1998, these questions were part of the "Injury Prevention" section of 1998 sample child "Prevention Module Supplement." The 1998 Field Representative's Manual explains the purpose of this line of questioning as follows:

Children between the ages of 7 and 15 are asked about the use of mouthguards and protective headgear while playing organized sports. The emphasis is not on how many sports they play, but whether they are protected while they are playing.

The 1998 prevention modules (for adults and children) were also designed to track progress toward Year 2000 Objectives.
