Description

For all persons who indicated that one of the reasons they were not covered by insurance (i.e., by Medicaid, Medicare, other public assistance, Indian Health Insurance, CHAMPUS/CHAMP-VA, other military health care, or any private health insurance plan) was because they were "covered by some other plan," this variable is the response to a follow-up question as to if the person was covered by a State, private or other kind of insurance plan.

Given the low frequencies in this variable, it is likely that this variable was asked to pick-up any remaining cases where respondents had not correctly responded to earlier questions on insurance coverage. This question was only asked of respondents who had not indicated earlier in the survey that they were covered by some form of insurance.

Also, those who indicated to have either State, private or other insurance in OTHCVO are not considered to be covered in the variable HICOVSTAT.

Comparability

This variable is completely comparable for 1994 to 1996.
