Description
For persons with Part B Medicare (which pays for medical coverage) or for whom it is unknown if they have Part B, MCARHMO reports whether the person was signed up with an HMO (a Health Maintenance Organization).
Respondents were told that coverage by HMO means that persons must "generally receive care from HMO doctors, otherwise the expense is not covered unless you were referred by the HMO or there was a medical emergency."
Related variables include MCAREHMOTYP, which report the type of HMO (available for 1999-2009); MCARADVTYP, which reports if persons have a Medicare Advantage or Medicare HMO plan are in that type of plan or in a Medicare supplemental plan (available for 2010-2012).
