GUMDISYR indicates whether sample adults and sample children had gum disease during the past 12 months.

Sample adults were first asked, "Have you ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had ... Gum disease?," with responses recorded in GUMDISEV. Respondents with an affirmative answer in GUMDISEV were asked the follow-up question, "During the past 12 months have you had ... Gum disease?," with responses recorded in GUMDISYR. The question associated with GUMDISYR for sample adults did not specify that the condition during the past year be diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional.

For sample children, interviewers asked respondents, "During the past 12 months, has a doctor or other health professional told you that [sample child] had ... Gum disease?"

Comparability

GUMDISYR is only available in 2007. Differences in skip patterns and question wording (detailed above) limit the comparability of this variable across the two age groups (sample adults versus sample children).
