Description
For sample persons aged 18 years and over who believe that good eating habits reduce the chances of developing major diseases (or whose beliefs on this were unknown) and who think that cancer is or could be related to diet, EHDCANOTHR indicates whether the respondent mentioned a kind of cancer not included in the pre-determined cancer categories when asked what types of cancer the respondent thought may be related to the things people eat and drink.
Interviewers were instructed to mark all types of cancer mentioned by the respondent in the corresponding category, but not to probe for the possible kinds of cancer into which responses were categorized. If the respondent mentioned a kind of cancer not included into this list, "Other" was recorded as a response. Respondents could list more than one type of cancer.
EHDCANOTHR is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 dealing with food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus or see DIETCHANGEV.
