For sample adults ages 18 and over, BUTRYR is a recoded variable that reports the number of times per year the respondent consumed butter on foods (e.g., on bread, rolls, or vegetables). Interviewers indicated to respondents not to include the use of margarine; margarine use was reported through a separate question later in the survey. Researchers may also want to use BUTRSIZ, which reports the corresponding portion size.
