Description

For sample adults who have ever gone to the hospital or emergency room for a balance problem (BALGOHOSPEV), BALGOHOSPNO reports the number of times the person went during the past 5 years. Please see the Comparability and Universe Tab for changes in universe over time.

This variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

In 2008, this variable corresponds to the most bothersome dizziness symptom (BALSBOTHER). In 2016, the question refers more generally to whether the action usually happens around the same time as the dizziness or balance problem(s).

Universe

  • 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever been to a hospital ER about dizziness.
  • 2016: Sample adults 18+ who have ever had a problem with dizziness or balance or have ever had a sympton of a dizziness or balance problem AND have visited a hosptial, including the ER, for the problem.
