Description
ANEMIAYR identifies sample children who had anemia during the past twelve months. Interviewers asked the broad opening question, "During the past 12 months, has [name] had any of the following conditions?," with anemia one of many conditions listed. The inquiry did not specify that the condition had to be diagnosed by a doctor or other health care professional.
The Field Representative's Manual for 2001 forward defines anemia as "a condition resulting from a reduction in hemoglobin content or in number of red blood cells. Because of the blood's reduced capacity to carry oxygen, all types exhibit similar symptoms--pallor, weakness, dizziness, fatigue, and, in severe cases, breathing difficulties and heart abnormalities." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.
Interviewers collected information on sickle cell anemia (as diagnosed by a physician or health professional) separately and earlier in the survey (SICKLCELEV).
