Description

SICKLCELEV identifies sample children whom a doctor or other health care professional had ever diagnosed as having Sickle Cell Anemia.

The Field Representative's Manual for 2001 forward defined Sickle Cell Anemia as "an inherited disorder in which the red blood cells assume sickle-like shapes. The red blood cells are fragile and subject to rupture, causing chronic anemia, fever, abdominal and joint pain, and jaundice." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.

Another survey question collected information on whether sample children had anemia during the past 12 months, without requiring that the anemia be diagnosed by a doctor or other health care professional (ANEMIAYR).
