Description
For sample adults age 18+ whose period of (a) feeling worried, tense, or anxious (WOR1MO) or (b) worrying more than most people (WORMORE) during the past 12 months (c) is still going on (WORSTILL), WORYR reports the number of years the period has been going on.
WORYR is a summary recode of following variables:
- WORNO (Duration of on-going period of worry: Number of units)
- WORTP (Duration of on-going period of worry: Time period)
The variables WORNO and WORTP were derived from the question, "How many months or years has it [the period of feeling worried, tense, or anxious or worrying more than most people] been going on?"

A similar variable, WORAGOYR, reports the duration in years of a period of feeling worried, tense, or anxious or worrying more than most people that had ended. (WORAGOYR is a summary recode of the variables WORAGONO and WORAGOTP.)
WORAGONO, WORAGOTP, WORNO, and WORTP were part of a series of mental health questions constituting the NHIS version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) screening scale for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The GAD questions contained in the NHIS version of the CIDI-SF can be used to calculate the probability of psychiatric caseness for GAD. WORAGOYR and WORYR, however, were not used to calculate generalized anxiety disorder scores.
