Description
For sample adults, WEXSUB reports whether they have been exposed to harmful substances at their job during the past 12 months. In 1985 and 1987, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and older who were employed in the past two weeks about exposure at their current job.
This variable is part of a series of variables with information on occupational safety and health. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
Comparability
The wording of the question changed slightly over time. In 1985, it was: "In the present job, are you exposed to any substances that could endanger your health, such as chemicals, dusts, fumes, or gases?" In 1987, it changed to: "On the current job, are you exposed to any substances that would be harmful if you breathed them or got them on your skin?" In 2023, this question asked "did you work in a job where you were exposed to any of the following: solvents, industrial glues, heavy metals, pesticides or motor engine exhaust?" These changes may reduce comparability. See the Survey Text tab for more details.
In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
