Description

For sample persons age 18 and older who ever had an ulcer and ever saw a doctor for the ulcer, ULCTYPEP indicates if she/he was told she/he had a peptic ulcer. More than one type of ulcer can be specified. Other ulcer types that can be reported are gastric, duodenal, or stomach, as well as an option that she/he wasn't told what type of ulcer she/he had, or that her/his ulcer was a type other than those pre-specified by the survey. Note that skin ulcers were not included as an "other" type of ulcer as the question is specifically about digestive ulcers.

This variable is part of the 1989 Digestive Disorders supplement, fielded to provide data on the nature and prevalence of symptoms attributed to disorders of the lower digestive tract in the adult population. The data provide prevalence estimates on certain common digestive disorders and complaints.
