Description

For sample persons age 18 and older who ever had an ulcer and ever saw a doctor for the ulcer, ULCTESTEND indicates if she/he ever had an upper endoscopy or gastroscopy to help diagnose his/her ulcer. Interviewers were instructed to read the following, if necessary: "For this test, a long flexible tube with a light on the end is inserted down the throat so that the lining of the stomach and the upper intestine can be examined."

This variable is part of the 1989 Digestive Disorders supplement, fielded to provide data on the nature and prevalence of symptoms attributed to disorders of the lower digestive tract in the adult population. The data provide prevalence estimates on certain common digestive disorders and complaints.
