Description

For sample children age 4-17 who ever received non-pharmacological treatment for emotional or behavioral difficulties (DIFTRETEV), TRETGENERAL indicates whether any such treatment was received from a pediatric or general medical care practice. Other possible locales for such treatment identified in the survey were a mental health private practice (TRETMHPRIV), a mental health clinic or center (TRETMHCLIN), the child's school (TRETSCHOOL), and a residual "other" category (TRETOTHER). Parents could mention more than one such treatment location, and interviewers were to mark all that applied.

Parents of sample children age 4-17 who had ever received non-pharmacological treatment for emotional or behavioral difficulties were also asked when the most recent help or treatment was received (DIFTRETWHEN).

All of these questions were part of a series of questions about emotional/behavioral difficulties included in the Child Mental Health Services (CMS) Questionnaire. According to the Field Representative's Manuals for 2005 forward, the purpose of the CMS Questionnaire "is to identify the Sample Child's interaction with health professionals or school staff personnel related to emotional or behavioral problems." For a summary of the various elements of the Child Mental Health Services Questionnaire and the variables based upon this instrument, see DIFTOLDDR.
