Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons aged 18 and older in 1991, 1993, 1997, and 1998, and all persons in 1989, TOOTHLOW reports if the person lost all of his/her lower permanent natural teeth.
Please refer to TOOTHUP for more information on whether the sample person lost all of his/her upper permanent natural teeth.
Comparability
There was a change in the universe from 1991 forward. In 1989, this question was asked of all persons, while it was only asked of sample adults in 1991 forward. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
