Description

For sample adults and sample children who have been bothered by ringing, roaring, or buzzing in their ears or head in the past 12 months (TINYR), TINLONG reports how long the noise had bothered the respondent. In 2007 and 2008, this question was asked only of sample adults.

Comparability

Because the intervals used to record respondents' answers varies over time, IPUMS NHIS uses a composite coding system for TINLONG to maximize comparability.

The first digit identifies time periods which can be identified in all years: less than one year (code 1), 1 to 2 years (code 2), 3 to 4 years (code 3), 5 to 9 years (code 4), and 10 years or more (code 5). The second digit identifies periods specified for only a subgroup of years.

In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
