Description

For sample adults aged 18 and over and sample children aged 4-17 who reported having at least one top alternative medicine (CAM) therapy and reported using their first CAM therapy to treat a specific health problem, symptom, or condition, TCONMOST1 reports the most important health problem, symptom, or condition for which the first top CAM therapy was used. TCONMOST1 can paired with CAMTHER1, which reports the corresponding CAM therapy that was used to treat the health problem the person identified as most important.

For a list of possible conditions, see the Codes Tab.

For related variables and more information, please see TABDOM1, or use the search function or IPUMS NHIS drop-down menus.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues.

However, it should be noted that there may be codes assigned to conditions in TCONMOST1 that were not response category options in the samples for which TCONMOST1 is available. The output codes for TCONMOST1, TCONMOST2, and TCONMOST3 are used to generate the variables that report the most important condition a person treated with a specific CAM therapy (e.g., ACUTCONMOST, BIOTCONMOST, etc.). To allow for comparability across these variables which combine the most important condition treated with a specific CAM therapy, TCONMOST1 includes codes for conditions that may not have been asked about in the samples for which TCONMOST1 are available, but which are included in these combined variables (i.e., ACUTCONMOST, BIOTCONMOST) in other samples.
