STRETCHDNO
Duration of stretching activity: Number of units

Codes

STRETCHDNO is a 3-digit-numeric variable.

000: Not in Universe
997: Unknown-refused
998: Unknown-not ascertained
999: Unknown-don't know

Description

STRETCHDNO reports the duration, in number of units, of sample adults' stretching leisure-time physical activities. This variable must be interpreted in conjunction with the variable STRETCHDTP, which reports the time period (minutes or hours) corresponding to the number of units reported in STRETCHDNO. For example, a respondent who does yoga for 30 minutes would have a STRETCHDNO value of 30 and a STRETCHDTP value of 1 (which is the code for "minutes").

STRETCHDMIN, a recoded variable created by the staff at the National Center for Health Statistics, draws upon the information in STRETCHDNO and STRETCHDTP and reports the duration of stretching leisure-time physical activity in a standardized unit of time, minutes.

Stretching leisure-time physical activities are described in the survey questionnaire as "physical activities designed to stretch your muscles such as yoga, or exercises like bending side-to-side, toe touches, and leg stretches."

For further discussion of data collection on leisure-time physical activity in general for 1997 forward, see VIG10FNO (Frequency of vigorous activity 10+ minutes: Number of units).
