Description

For all persons who did not receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or for whom it was unknown whether they received SSI in 1997, and for all persons in 1993-1996 and 1998 onward, SSIAPPLY indicates if the person has ever applied for SSI benefits, even if the claim was denied.

From 1993 to 1996, SSIAPPLY is part of the Family Resources supplement that provides information on individuals' health benefits, amount of coverage and income received from employment, welfare benefits, public assistance, and savings. Starting in 1997, this variable is part of the core person questionnaires.

Questions in the Family Resources supplement are different from those in the core survey in terms of the content and the treatment of missing data. Missing data in the Family Resources supplement were imputed by NHIS. Users can refer to the imputation flag variable SSIAPPLYFL to identify persons with imputed data.

Comparability

In 1997, the question was only asked of persons who did not receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or for whom it was unknown whether they received SSI. In 1993-1996 and 1998 onward, the universe includes all persons. This change of universe limits comparability between samples.
