Description

For children under age 18, SPRELCH reports the relationship of the sample person ages 18 or older to the child. SPRELCH was first introduced in 1985 as part of the Health Promotion and Child Safety Supplement and is intended to identify the relationship between the child and the respondent for the Health Promotion and Child Safety Supplement. For related variables and more information about this supplement, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

In 1985, nonparental guardians were marked as "Other." A category for "Guardian" was added to the 1990 supplement. The "Parent" and "Unknown" categories are comparable across surveys. Aside from the change in response options, no comparability issues exist for this variable.
