Description

For sample respondents age 18 and over who have worked in the past 2 weeks for a private company or in the public sector, smoke on some days, and ever smoked while at work, SMOKWORKLES indicates whether the respondent felt he or she smoked fewer cigarettes per day because of their employer's smoking policy.

In 1994, the question for SMOKWORKLES was only asked of respondents who worked mainly indoors and whose employer had an official policy to restrict smoking.

Comparability

The change in the universe reduces comparability of this variable between 1992 and 1994.

As indicated above, in 1992, even respondents who indicated that their employer did not have a work place policy received this question for SMOKWORKLES. This change in the denominator my affect the estimates and reduce comparability between 1994 and 1992.

Universe

  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who worked for a private company or the federal, state or local government, who were employed during the past two weeks, and who smoke now or smoke some days.
  • 1994: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who worked for a private company or for the federal, state, or local government, who worked in the past two weeks, who work mainly indoors, and whose employer has an official policy that restricts smoking.
