Description

For sample adults ages 18 and over who live in a home where at least one resident smokes inside, SMOKHOMRESDA reports the average number of days per week residents smoke anywhere inside the home.

Comparability

Aside from changes in wording, there are no comparability issues with this variable. In 1994 the question was asked of half of sample adults. Changes in survey design affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1994: Half of sample adults age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who live in a home where a resident smokes anywhere inside.
  • 2005; 2010: Sample adults 18+ who have at least one resident smoking inside the home.
