Description

For female persons of childbearing age who ever smoked 100 cigarettes, SMOKENOWPS indicates if the person smoked at the time of the survey. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for changes in universe between samples.

For all years, a cigarette was respondent defined, but did not include cigars or marijuana. Use IPUMS NHIS search function and drop down menus for related variables.

Comparability

In 1985 and 1990, this question was asked of female persons ages 18 to 44 who were pregnant at the time of the survey or gave live birth in the last five years. In 1991, this question was asked of female persons ages 18 to 49 who gave live birth in the last five years. There are no other comparability issues with this variable.

Universe

  • 1985; 1990: Female persons ages 18 to 44 who are pregnant now or gave live birth in the last five years who have ever smoked 100 cigarettes.
  • 1991: Female persons ages 18 to 49 who gave live birth in the last five years who have ever smoked 100 cigarettes.
