Description
For sample persons ages 18 and over, SMOKEALARM reports if the respondent has at least one working smoke detector on each floor of his or her home, including a finished basement or attic.

Comparability
In 1994 this question was asked of half of sample adults with at least one working smoke detector installed in the home. In 1998 and 2003 this question was asked of all sample adults. This change in universe reduces comparability between 1994 and subsequent samples.
Universe
1994: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have at least one smoke detector that works in their home.
