Description

SMKPGANY reports whether the female person smoked cigarettes at any time during her most recent pregnancy. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for more information on changes in universe between samples.

Comparability

A change in universe significantly limits comparison of the 1985 sample to subsequent years. In 1985, this question was asked only of female persons who are currently pregnant and former smokers. In 1990, SMKPGANY was asked of any female adult aged 18 to 44 who had smoked 100 cigarettes in her life and was currently pregnant at the time of the survey. In 1998, this question was asked of female persons aged 18-49 who had a live birth within the past 5 years, smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their entire lifetime, and were smoking when they became pregnant.

In 2005 and forward, the question was asked of any female adult aged 18 to 49 who had smoked 100 cigarettes in her life and had a live birth in the past five years.
