Description

For sample persons aged 18 and older who worked at a civilian job last year, SKINSUBST reports if the person's skin was exposed to any substances that could irritate skin in the past 12 months other than those specifically mentioned.

 

Substances specifically asked about include solvents or degreasers (SKINSOLDEG), petroleum products (SKINPETRO), soaps, detergents or cleaning solutions (SKINCLEANSOL), cutting oils, machine coolants or metal working fluids (SKINWRKFL), paints, varnishes, lacquers or other coatings (SKINPAINT), glues, pastes or other adhesives (SKINGLUES), acids or alkalies (SKINACIDS), pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides or other fumigants (SKINPEST), food (SKINFOOD), and plants, trees or shrubs (SKINPLANTS).

This variable was included in the 1988 Occupational Health supplement.
