Description
For persons age 17 and older in quarters 2 through 4, RESPSMOKER is a recoded variable indicating the respondent's current smoking status.
For the 1970 survey, the basic cigarette smoking status questions consisted of two parts: (1) "Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes during your entire life?" If yes, "Do you smoke cigarettes now?" Information from those two questions was recoded in categories of "Present Smoker," "Former Smoker," "Never Smoked," "Don't know if even smoked" or "Unknown respondent."
