Description
This variable reports the housing category that respondents felt best describes their home. Responses were reported as "basement, 1st or 2nd floor apartment" (available for 1991 and 1993), "apartment above 2nd floor," "single family home/townhouse," "trailer/mobile home" or "other."
Comparability
Apart from the small change in universe, this variable is mostly comparable over time. In 1994, the category of "basement, first or second floor apartment or condominium" was dropped from the survey. To compare over time, researchers can combine such responses (IPUMS NHIS code "2") from the 1991 and 1993 surveys with IHIS code of "3" (apartment or condominium above second floor) to form one category of any apartment or condominium.

- 1994: Half of sample adults age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplemet).
