For sample adults, READNUTRIT indicates how often the respondent reads the nutritional information about calories, fat, and cholesterol sometimes listed on the label when buying a food for the first time.

READNUTRIT was first introduced as part of a 1991 supplement on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. It was later included in a set of variables used to obtain baseline data on weight control and nutrition for the "Year 2000 Objectives". For additional information please use the IPUMS NHIS search function or drop-down menus.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.

  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement).
  • 1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement).
  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+.
