Description
For all persons, RACEIMPUTE reports if the respondent's race was reported in the survey, or if the respondent's race was imputed. Beginning in 2000, imputations are classified according to the raw data response from when the respondent was asked what race she/he considers her/himself to be. Beginning in 2017, NHIS has suppressed imputation flag variables indicating whether an ethnicity or race response was imputed; these variables are no longer available on public use files.
Comparability
Prior to 2000, unknown responses to the variable asking respondents about what race they consider themselves are not available, thus response categories for RACEIMPUTE only include provided, or imputed. Beginning in 2003, respondents' race was also marked as imputed if the respondent replied to the question about her/his race identifying that she/his considers her/himself another race, or reported more than one race but did not specify.
